CUSCO / CHOQEKIRAW
5 Days / 4 Nights
 
TOUR DESCRIPTION
BREAKFAST   BOX LUNCH   LUNCH   DINNER

DAY 01 CUSCO / SAYWITE / VILLA LOS LOROS (2,200 m.a.s.l.)  
Depart from Cusco at 6:30 am on private bus. We go along the highway to Abancay until reaching the Archaeological Park of Saywite at 9:30am. We will visit the mysterious monolith and the nearby ruins. Later we continue across the town of Huanipaca, descending along the canyon of the Apurimac River until getting to Tambobamba, sector where the facilities of Villa Los Loros are located. After accommodation in rooms, there is a small reunion to talk about the next day´s hike. Finally, we will go to sleep early to begin the activities first thing in the morning.

DAY 02 VILLA LOS LOROS / SAN IGNACIO BEACH / CHOQEKIRAW (2,900 m.a.s.l.)
Departure at 05.00 am. to start a 2 ½ -hour hike approximately passing by the former hacienda San Ignacio until reaching the river beach of the noisy Apurimac river (its meaning in quechua is “God that talks”). Then we will cross the Sa Ignacio bridge and start the uphill hike from the river level (1,500m.a.s.l.) to the camp at Choqekiraw located at 2,900m.a.s.l. On the way, we will be able to observe the beauty of the landscape, as well as the great variety of flora and fauna (the 17km trek is classified as level 4). After that we will visit the farming terraces system of Phaqchayoq and the house with the waterfall to finally return to camp to spend the night in tents.

DAY 03 CHOQEKIRAW
We will have all day to visit the main sectors of the archaeological area such as the area of Pikiwasi administrative buildings, the house of the priests, the ceremonial platform or Ushnu, the main square or Hauqaypata, the food deposits or Qolqas, and the high complex or Hanan. At the end of the visit return to camp and overnight.

DAY 04 CHOQEKIRAW / HACIENDA SAN IGNACIO / VILLA LOS LOROS
We will take some time to admire the beautiful landscape surrounding the camp. We will start our way back to Tambobamba, descending along the impressive canyon of the Apurimac River until reaching the former hacienda San Ignacio, where we will rest. Then, we will continue on horseback til the Villa Los Loros lodge. Arrival at the lodge and overnight.

DAY 05 VILLA LOS LOROS / CUSCO
We will board the bus back to Cusco at 9am. Arrival at the city at approximately 3 in the afternoon. The trip takes about 5 hours

 
THE PROGRAM INCLUDES
 
  • Briefing the passengers at the hotel the day before departure.
  • Round trip transfer on private bus (Cusco-Villa Los Loros-Cusco)

  • Two nights camping at the archaeological park of Choqekiraw with complete high quality camping gear: extreme weather tents, handmade mats made out of upholstered zebra foam, sleeping bags stuffed with hollow fiber and clean blankets, kitchen and dining homemade tent, camping tables with benches,.
  • At the lodge, all meals and drinks selection
  • Throughout the excursion, every meal is agreed with the cook the day before trekking (we exclusively serve fresh cooked meals, hot drinks, water and soft drinks)
  • Porter service including personal objects of participants, up to 3 kg. per person
  • Saddle horses (including 1 muleteer for every two horses) for the return journey from San Ignacio beach to the lodge.
  • Entrance tickets to the archaeological complexes of Saywite and Choqekiraw 
  • Permanent radio communication system throughout the excursion

WHAT TO BRING
 
  • Trekking shoes, t-shirts or long-sleeve shirts, shorts, sweat suit or light travel trousers (jeans not recommended), cap for sunny days, jacket, sweater, cap for cold weather, repellent, sun block, personal care products and others.

THE HIKERS BACKPACK
 

During the trek each participant will carry its own backpack with his/her personal things. Additionally we will hand out a 1-liter bottle of water which will be refilled by porters in charge, and some energy snacks to be eaten on the way. We suggest not exceeding the established 4-5 kg of weight.
