CHOQEKIRAW / MACHU PICCHU
10 Days / 9 Nights
 
TOUR DESCRIPTION
BREAKFAST   BOX LUNCH   LUNCH   DINNER

DAY 01 CUSCO / VILLA LOS LOROS
Departure from the city of Cusco at 8:00 am on private bus. We go along the highway to Abancay, cross the Apurimac Riverat 1,600m.a.s.l. to go up the Qorimarca gorge (4,000m.a.s.l.) from where we will descend to the inter-Andean valley of Huanipaca to finally reach “Villa Los Loros.” Accommodation at the lodge. Overnight.

DAY 02 VILLA LOS LOROS (2,200m.a.s.l.) / CHOQEKIRAW (2,900m.a.s.l.)
We start a 2 ½ -hour hike to reach the beach at the   noisy Apurimac River (in the Qeswa = God that speaks). Then we go across the San Ignacio hanging bridge and begin the ascent from river level (1,500m.a.s.l.) until reaching the Choqekiraw camp, located at 2,900m.a.s.l. On the way we will beable to admire the beauty of the landscape as well as the diversity of flora and fauna. Later, we will visit the farming terrace system of Phaqchayoq and the house with the waterfall, and after that we will return back to camp. Overnight. (Trekking 17km / Time period: 7-8 hours)

DAY 03 CHOQEKIRAW
We will have all day to visit the main sectors of the archaeological area such as the area of Pikiwasi administrative buildings, the house of the priests, the ceremonial platform or Ushnu, the main square or Hauqaypata, the food deposits or Qolqas, and the high complex or Hanan, among others. Finally, return to camp and overnight.

DAY 04 CHOQEKIRAW (2,900 m.s.n.m) / PINCHAUNUYOC (2,487 m.s.n.m)
We start the ascent from camp site, going across high altitude forests rich in epiphytes, bromeliads and beautiful orchids, until going round the mountain pass of Choqekiraw (2,270m.a.s.l.), and start a long descent along the western hillside of the mountain. We will visit the archaeological site of Pincha Unuyoc, a rainbow of farming terraces crowned by a small ceremonial site, where we will base our camp. Overnight. (Trekking 8,500km / Time period 5 hours)

DAY 05 PINCHAUNUYOC (2,487m.a.s.l.) / MAIZAL (2,892m.a.s.l.)
We continue our descent to the warm valley of the Blanco River or Yuraqmayo (1,875m.a.s.l.). The we start the ascent to the Qoriwayrachina Mountain until reaching Maizal, a natural balcony with an impressive view. We will base camp there. Overnight. (Trekking 9,5km / Time period 5 hours)

DAY 06 MAIZAL (2,892m.a.s.l.) / YANAMA (3,520 m.a.s.l.)
We go up across a varied forest going past by the ld Victoria Mines until reaching the San Juan mountain pass (4,200m.a.s.l.) where we will enjoy the extraordinary views of he Vilcabamba mountain range. Following the path, in the slope of the cliffs, we will get to the Yanama community. (Trekking 12,5km / Time period 7 hours)      

DAY 07 YANAMA (3,520m.a.s.l.) / TOTORA (3,400 m.a.s.l.)
The route ascends across the pastureland of a high Andean valley with a moderate slope until reaching the Yanama gorge (4,620m.a.s.l.). From the gorge we start the descent to Santa Teresa valley, having as a background the impressive views of the Salcantay (6,270m.a.s.l.) and Humantay (5,917m.a.s.l.) mountains; the highest peaks in the Vilcabamba range, in which hillsides lies Machu Picchu. We will zig-zag down to reach the camp site, on the town of Totora`s riverside. Overnight. (Trekking 12km / Time period 5 hours)

DAY 08 TOTORA / LA PLAYA (2,135 m.s.n.m)
This day we will go downhill, across a sinuous path until reaching the beginning of Santa Teresa valley. Here we will enjoy the nearby hot springs. After that, we will continue hiking across a nice forest and then across coffee plantations and a granadilla, papaya and avocado orchard all this surrounded by impressive mountains until getting to the head of the highway, La Playa, where we will camp. Overnight. (trekking 15km / Time period 5 hours)

DAY 09 LA PLAYA / HYDROELECTRIC POWER PLANT (1,875m.a.s.l.) / MACHU PICCHU PUEBLO
This day we will have to choose between two options: continue trekking until reaching the hydroelectric power plant, from where we will board the train to Machu Picchu Pueblo, or take a bus or a truck that will take us from La Playa to the hydroelectric power plant to board the train to Machu Picchu Pueblo.
In the first case, a 6-hour* trek awaits us; time during which we will be able to visit the archaeological complex of Llactapata (2,590m.a.s.l.). This is a ceremonial site related to sunrise in winter solstice that one can see rising over Machu Picchu.
In the second case, our journey to the hydroelectric power plant will take only 1 to 2 hours. In both cases the train will take us to Machu Picchu Pueblo in 15 minutes. There we will rest at the hotel or enjoy of comforting thermal baths in Aguas Calientes. (Trekking 15 km / Time period 6 hours)*

DAY 10 MACHU PICCHU / CUSCO
Early departure to take the first bus that will leave us at the Inca sanctuary, located above the canyon of the Urubamba River in the heart of the jungle mountain range of Salkantay, wonder of the world that we will visit the rest of the day. We will have the chance to have optional visits to the impressive mountain of Waynapicchu or the sun gate (Intipunku). Later, we will return to the town of Machu Picchu to board the train back to Cusco. Arrival and transfer to hotel.
