PERU: CENTRAL AND NORTH ANDES

TOUR DESCRIPTION

DAY 01 ARRIVAL IN LIMA (154 m.a.s.l.)
Arrival at Lima’s international airport, reception, transfer and accommodation in hotel. (Private transportation and expert personnel). Overnight.

DAY 02 LIMA / TARMA (3,080 m.a.s.l.)
Breakfast at hotel. Departure to the central Andes heading to the city of Tarma, called “The Pearl of the Andes” (Private transportation with Spanish speaking driver - 266 Km. east of Lima in a 5-hour journey - completely paved road). Arrival, accommodation and lunch at hotel. Afternoon at leisure with car availability. (a visit to the Grutas de Guagapo and to San Pedro de Cajas, a town of weavers, in the Valley of Tarma). Dinner and overnight at hotel.

DAY 03 TARMA / JUNIN / HUÁNUCO (1,893 m.a.s.l.)
Breakfast at hotel. Departure to the city of Huanuco going through the National Reserve and Lake Junin (Private transportation with Spanish speaking driver - 250 Km. in a 6-hour journey - completely paved road). Arrival, accommodation and lunch at hotel. In the afternoon, visit the ancient archaeological complex and temple of Kotosh next to the city (Spanish/English bilingual guide). Overnight

DAY 04 HUÁNUCO / TINGO MARIA (690 m.a.s.l.) / HUÁNUCO
Breakfast at hotel. Full day visit the warm city of Tingo Maria, called the “The Gateway to Peruvian Amazon” (Private transportation with Spanish/English bilingual local guide – 116 Km. in a 3-hour journey either way – completely paved road). Visit the Great Ecosystem of the Tingo Maria National Park, known as “The Sleeping Beauty” and a grout named “The Cave of the Owls”; also visit the Universidad Nacional Agraria de la Amazonia’s zoo-hatchery. Lunch included. After the visit, return to the city of Huánuco. Overnight.   

DAY 05 HUÁNUCO / HUANUCOPAMPA (3,736 m.a.s.l.) / HUALLANCA (3,526 m.a.s.l.)
Breakfast at hotel. Early departure on private vehicle towards the archaeological complex of Huanucopampa (144 Km. in a 6-hour journey - unpaved road - Spanish/English bilingual local guide). This important administrative, religious and military Incan center is located in a great plateau of 21 km2.
Box-lunch included during trip. Continue journey to the small town of Huallanca (1 additional hour journey). Overnight. Dinner included.

06 HUALLANCA / CHAVIN / HUARAZ (3,080 m.a.s.l.)
Breakfast at hotel. In the morning, departure by private transportation to the archaeological complex of Chavin de Huantar (A 3-hour journey on private transportation with local bilingual guide – unpaved road). Lunch included. After the visit, continue to the city of Huaraz (A 3-hour journey – partially unpaved road). Overnight.

DAY 07 HUARAZ / HUASCARÁN NATIONAL PARK / HUARAZ
Breakfast at hotel. Full day excursión to the Huascaran National Park and the Llanganuco Lagoon (Private transportation with bilingual local guide – partially paved road). Lunch included. Overnight.

DAY 08 HUARAZ / SECHIN / TRUJILLO (0 m.a.s.l.)
Breakfast at hotel. Departure on private transportation without a guide to the city of Trujillo (335 Km. in a 9-hour journey - unpaved road in bad conditions, at the stretch Huaraz / Casma), visiting on the way the archaeological complex and temple of Sechin  (Spanish/English speaking local guide). Lunch on route. Arrival and accommodation at hotel. Overnight.

DAY 09 TRUJILLO
Breakfast at hotel. Full day visit to The Huacas of the Sun, the Moon and the Dragon, and the citadel of Chan Chan. Lunch included in a restaurant at Huanchaco beach (Private transportation with bilingual local guide). Overnight.

DAY 10 TRUJILLO / EL BRUJO / CAJAMARCA (2,750 m.a.s.l.)
Breakfast at hotel. Departure on private transportation with bilingual guide to the city of Cajamarca (300 Km. in a 5-hour journey – completely paved road), visiting on the way the archaeological complex of El Brujo. Lunch on route included. Arrival and accommodation at hotel. Overnight.

DAY 11 CAJAMARCA
Breakfast at hotel. Full day visit to the city and hill of Santa Apolonia, the cemetery of Otuzco and the natural and archaeological complex of Cumbemayo (Private transportation with Spanish/English bilingual local guide) Lunch at a typical restaurant. Overnight.

DAY 12 CAJAMARCA / KUNTURWASI / CHICLAYO (27 m.a.s.l.)
Breakfast at hotel. Departure on private transportation with Spanish/English speaking guide to the city of Chiclayo (263 Km. in a 5-hour journey – Speaking Spanish / English guide - completely paved road, the detour to Kuntur is unpaved), visiting on the way the archaeological complex and site museum of Kuntur Wasi in the province of San Pablo. Box lunch on route. Arrival and accommodation at hotel. Overnight.

DAY 13 CHICLAYO
Breakfast at hotel.  Full day visit to the The Royal Tomb of the Lord of Sipan in the archaeological complex of Huaca Rajada, the Royal Tombs of Sipan Museum in Lambayeque and the pyramids of Tucume, including lunch at a typical restaurant (Private transportation with bilingual local guide). Overnight.

DAY 14 CHICLAYO / LIMA
Breakfast at hotel. Transfer to airport at proper time to reach the return flight to Lima. Arrival, and reception by personnel, transfer and accommodation at hotel. In the afternoon, visit the colonial and modern city of Lima (Private transportation with bilingual local guide). Overnight.

DAY 15 DEPARTURE FROM LIMA
Breakfast at hotel. Transfer to airport at proper time to reach the international flight.

NOTES ON PROGRAM
 
  • Because of the bad conditions in some of the stretches of the roads, the journey could be somewhat demanding. Because of the same reason and in order to avoid using buses that are too large, we thought it would be better to make groups of 10 passengers maximum.
  • Transportation will not be the same throughout the journey, and each correspondent will take care of transportation in their corresponding towns.
  • The program is suggested for the months between April and November (dry season, without rain).
  • It is suggested to bring light and warm clothing. The itinerary has abrupt changes of temperature, from regions of high altitude and intense cold to very hot rainforest regions.
  • Where the program mentions BILINGUAL LOCAL GUIDES one can choose from French, Italian and German.
  • Following is a brief description of some of the places to visit (the rest of the places have already been described in Silvana Tours´ traditional Service Manual.)
PLACES
 

HUAGAPO GROUT
Natural grout more than 2,000 mts deep, known as “The deepest in South America.”  There are stalagmites and stalactites inside, besides some pre-historic paintings. It is located in the district of Palcamayo at 31 Km from the city of Tarma.

SAN PEDRO DE CAJAS
One of the nine districts that form the province of Tarma. Worldwide famous for its handicrafts, basically the weaving of tapestries made of sheep wool.

NATURAL RESERVE OF JUNIN
It is located in the Peruvian central Andes, in the plateau of Bombon, over 4,100 m.a.s.l. and an area of 53,000 hectares. It is one of the natural Andean ecosystems protected by the Peruvian government. Lake Junin or Chinchaycocha, the second largest after Lake Titicaca, is located within the reserves boundaries.

KOTOSH
It is located at 4 Km. from the city of Huánuco, and it is considered one of the oldest temples in Peru and South America. The oldest buildings date 2000 BC. It is one of the most important archaeological complexes that shows Peruvian civilization was already organized around temples and complex social systems since times. 

TINGO MARIA´S NATIONAL PARK
The ecological reserve is protected by a beautiful mountainous area in the range known as “The Sleeping Beauty.” It is located in the so called High Jungle with a surface of 18,000 hectares. The “Cave of the Owls” outstands in this park, and it is the main opening to a complex underground cave system inhabited by a huge colony of local birds called “guacharos.”

HUANUCOPAMPA
Also known as “Huanuco Marka” or “Huanuco Viejo” it is an archaeological complex that occupies a 2 km area that has almost 400 visible structures. It was built circa the 15th century, and it is considered one of the best designed administrative, social and military centres in the Central Andes, and of most importance in the development and expansion of the great Incan empire.
